The OBGYN, the Specialists, and Surgery

The OBGYN

OBGYNs prioritize obstetrics over surgery, receiving limited surgical training during residency. Afterward, their surgical skills diminish due to a focus shift towards obstetrics. They spend over 80% of their time on obstetrics and office gynecological care, rarely performing surgery. In comparison, surgical specialties like general surgery, urology, and orthopedics exclusively focus on surgery. OBGYNs perform surgery less than 20% of the time, functioning more as part-time surgeons and full-time obstetricians.

The Specialists

There are surgically focused “sub-specialties” in the field of OBGYN that concentrate mostly on surgery.
